Ideal candidates are individuals who are severely overweight and are committed to lifestyle changes. At North Texas Bariatric & General Surgery, P.A., we can provide treatment to gastric sleeve candidates throughout the greater Dallas area.
DR. FRANK VENINGA: The ideal patient for a gastric sleeve is the same patient who is ideal for any bariatric procedure. People who have body mass index greater than 35 with one of several co-morbid conditions, or anyone with a BMI greater than 40, are candidates for gastric sleeve resection. The procedure itself takes anywhere from approximately an hour to an hour and 15 minutes. Typically people spend the night in the hospital and go home the next day, they usually take oral pain medications for three to five days, and they usually come back to see us in a week, driving themselves, and virtually everyone goes back to work in two weeks. The top three advantages of the gastric sleeve resection refers, it provides long-term fairly durable weight loss. Secondly, it has a very attractive safety profile. And lastly, their ability to eat regular food in a regular way is much better with a gastric sleeve resection than it is with either a lap-band or a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or a duodenal switch. You preserve the stomach. The stomach grows somewhat relative to its original creation. It always grows somewhat. So they can basically eat a regular meal in a regular way, and they don’t have issues related to regurgitation or dumping, as they do with a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. And if they lose 50% of their excess weight, or more, many of their medical illnesses simply disappear, they become much more energetic, much more hopeful, much more involved in actually living and contributing both to the society and their families. It is really very wonderful to see that happen. It makes me feel good to see them doing well. I'm very happy to do this for these people.
