DR. FRANK VENINGA: There is an area of our brain called the hypothalamus, which is part of our brainstem, which we have in common with sharks, with alligators and it is in this area that we have the determination of whether we are hungry or full. It is believed that the lap band and the other bariatric procedures, at least in part affect that area and therefore makes it possible for us to stop eating a little bit sooner and therefore take in fewer calories over the course of the day and result in us weighing less.
