DR. FRANK VENINGA: With any surgery there are risks. With bariatric surgery, the risks are relatively small, particularly with the lap band operation. It is generally recognized as being anywhere from five to 10 times safer overall then the risk of say the Roux-en-y gastric bypass procedure. The gastric sleeve resection lies somewhere in between the two. The various risks, which occur with any surgery are infection, bleeding, injury the organs which are involved, with bariatric surgery it's usually the stomach, the esophagus and the nearby structures such as the liver and the spleen and other portions of the bowel. We do our very best to avoid those and in fact, the vast majority of lap band cases are done as an outpatient procedure. If there are any particular complications that you are concerned about, we'll be more than happy to spend whatever time necessary to explain them to you here at the office.
