DR. FRANK VENINGA: Everyone who comes to see me has in their mind how much weight they want to lose, they have a goal and I think that's wonderful. But everyone I know wants to be thin just as I want to be thin and that in truth is very difficult to do. To have a reasonable expectation is both a good thing as well as having a very high goal. The average weight loss for Roux-en-y gastric bypass surgeries or lap band surgery for gastric sleeve resections, have been established based on reported successes in relatively large studies. Usually the studies show a 50-60% excess weight loss for lap band surgery. That doesn't guarantee that every individual will reach 50%. In fact, 15% of the people who have lap band lose less than 25%, but that means a certain percentage does very well and lose 75 or more. The average weight loss is 50-60%. That is what we try to get each and every one of our patients to reach.
