DR. FRANK VENINGA: The lap band procedure is an operation where through either five or six trocars the lap band device is placed. It's a silastic ring, which goes around the very top of your stomach. There's only about one or two finger breadths of stomach above the band and below the esophagus. It is just a region. Many people think of it in terms of a pouch, but is not a pouch. It is simply a region of the stomach, which when you swallow a bolus of food becomes distended, signals back to your brain and then passes through. That is the total effect of the band. It is a very simple system, but it augments the natural system that we have, which determines whether or not we are hungry and when we are able to stop eating because we are full enough.
