BARBARA: My name is Barbara. On your first consultation we have you watch a movie or a shortened version of the lap band procedure to help you understand the placement of the lap band and risks of the surgery. We discuss your medical history and enter into the electronic medical database. We do a metabolic breath test. This estimates your resting energy expenditure. It also estimates the calories necessary to maintain your weight and the estimated calorie decrease to lose weight. I then discuss various components of the surgery and Dr. Veninga will discuss more aspects of the surgery and perform a physical exam. The initial office visit normally lasts approximately two hours.
