Our Patient Protocols page provides information about the LAP-BAND® System and how it helps our patients lose excess weight permanently.
Dr. Frank Veninga specializes in laparoscopic bariatric surgery with the adjustable LAP-BAND® System so Dallas and all Texas residents who are suffering the negative physical and psychological effects of morbid obesity can overcome their condition and lead normal, healthy lives. The adjustable LAP-BAND® System offers several advantages over gastric bypass surgery, including the distinct advantage that it is essentially reversible should complications occur. Dr. Veninga believes in his skills and expertise, and his drive to educate his patients about laparoscopic bariatric surgery. Dr. Veninga has included a weight loss surgery FAQs page, a Patient Information page, and a Patient Tips for obesity surgery page on his website to help not only his patients, but anyone seeking information about laparoscopic bariatric surgery with the adjustable LAP-BAND® System. Dallas, Plano, Lewisville, and all Texas residents who wish to overcome morbid obesity can get excellent care and treatment at North Texas Bariatric from Dr. Frank Veninga.
The adjustable LAP-BAND® System has increased acceptance for many who desire bariatric surgery. Dallas and other Texas patients seeking a surgical solution for morbid obesity prior to the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System had only the choice among other more highly invasive procedures. In minimally invasive adjustable LAP-BAND® System surgery, a band is placed around the upper portion of the stomach to form a small region at the top of the stomach. The band restricts the movement of food to the remainder of the stomach because the food accumulates at the top of the stomach. The band is adjusted to fit the patient's needs by adding or removing saline solution, a salt solution that mimics the body's own fluids. Why this typically results in people losing weight by consuming fewer calories is not exactly known. There is a mechanical effect to be sure, but the effect on the hunger-satiety system seems to be more important. In general, that area is stretched and additional neural and hormonal signals are sent to the satiety system of the patient's brain. This results in the patient feeling fuller sooner after less food.
Adjustable LAP-BAND® System surgery is one of our weight loss surgeon's specialties. The LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band is placed around the stomach in a laparoscopic bariatric surgery procedure. This means that Dr. Veninga uses a tiny camera called a laparoscope to allow him to see the inner structures of the abdomen without having to make large incisions. In fact, the procedure usually requires only five incisions that are no greater than a half inch long. Working through these small openings, Dr. Veninga places the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band around the upper portion of the stomach and secures it. The reservoir or port-site incision is lengthened only wide enough to secure the port, typically on the fascia of the rectus abdominus muscle.
The patient subsequently remains in the recovery room for one to two hours, then proceeds to the Day Surgery Unit. The patient is usually able to go home on the day of the surgery. Along with full commitment by the patient to follow behavior-changing protocols, the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band placed in a laparoscopic bariatric surgery procedure can help any Dallas or Texas resident who is morbidly obese to lose substantial weight and experience the many health and social benefits that result.
To help patients get the treatment they need, Dr. Veninga provides assistance in determining insurance coverage and weight loss surgery financing options so that a payment plan for the adjustable LAP-BAND® System procedure can be arranged to fit most budgets.
