Gather Items for Your Recovery Area

Staying comfortable after bariatric surgery is important to the recovery process. Taking time in the weeks before surgery to purchase or gather items to keep you comfortable during recovery will help you get the rest you need for your body to heal.

In addition, gathering a variety of items to keep you entertained is a good idea while you're less mobile and resting during the first few days of recovery. Some things patients find beneficial to have during recovery include:

  • Plenty of pillows to support the body
  • Soft blankets
  • Loose fitting, comfortable clothing, including elastic waist pants
  • A step stool with handle to help you get in and out of bed
  • Books, magazines, a tablet, or laptop
  • Movies and TV shows

Get Prescription Medications Filled

Patients are generally prescribed pain medication to help manage any pain or discomfort during the initial stages of recovery. Prescriptions for pain medications, or any other medications you may take that have been approved for use during recovery, should be filled before undergoing bariatric surgery so they are readily available once you get home. Some over-the-counter pain relief, such as Tylenol, may be taken upon surgeon recommendation.

Also, it may be difficult to swallow pills after surgery as patients often need to take small sips of liquid after bariatric surgery. Purchasing a pill cutter or pill crusher is a good idea to ensure you are able to take any necessary medications during recovery.

Small Containers

After bariatric surgery, significant changes must be made to diet, including portion size. Having a supply of small containers on hand can help with portioning out the recommended amount of food for each meal and snacks.

Using small containers to eat from can also help give you a psychological advantage of feeling like you have more to eat than serving a small portion from a large plate.

For this reason, many patients also like using small cups to drink from and some even like to use small cocktail forks and small spoons. Using smaller cups and utensils can help slow you down while you eat and drink and are a great addition to any bariatric surgery recovery shopping list.

Healthy Foods and Drinks

The success of bariatric surgery largely depends on a commitment to following all dietary restrictions and guidelines. Immediately after surgery, the foods you eat and drink will be limited.

You will be given detailed instructions on what you can eat, how much you can eat at a time, and when you can add new foods to your diet.

With that said, some foods you may want to get in preparation for your first week of recovery include:

  • Chicken, beef, and vegetable broth
  • Jell-O
  • Sugar-free popsicles
  • Bottled water
  • Non-carbonated sugar-free beverages
