Gastric Sleeve Resection

Jan 30, 2012 @ 12:43 PM – by drveninga

Being morbidly obese makes people more prone to major health problems, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, stokes, heart attacks, and joint problems. This is why many people are turning to Dallas bariatric surgery in order to reduce their body mass and achieve a more ideal weight. Making this sort of lifestyle change is a positive step in the right direction, and we encourage you to keep it in mind as a viable option for you or a loved one.

Popular Options for Bariatric Surgery

One of the most popular options for surgical weight loss is gastric banding surgery. This can be done either through Dallas LAP-BAND® surgery or the REALIZE&™ Band. Basically, a gastric band will reduce the stomach size and limit the amount of calories that a person can consume.

Another popular option which you may have heard a lot about is the gastric bypass, which alters a patient’s digestive tract. By bypassing part of the intestinal tract, the amount of calories that are absorbed into the system will be reduced.

Yet there is another option to consider aside from banding and bypass surgery. This one is called the gastric sleeve, which can also be referred to as a sleeve gastrectomy.

The Gastric Sleeve Option

A sleeve gastrectomy is a way for us to reduce the size of the stomach surgically, similar to how gastric banding works. Even though the stomach size is reduced, a patient’s digestive tract will not be altered as in a gastric bypass surgery.

How Gastric Sleeve Resection Works

When you have your stomach size altered through vertical sleeve gastrectomy, you will simply have the size of your stomach reduced permanently. You will not have to deal with major alterations to your digestive tract, and your appetite will be greatly reduced. This will lead to gradual yet pronounced weight loss. Following surgery, you will still need to alter your diet and lifestyle as with other weight loss surgeries.

The Gastric Sleeve Procedure

Patients will first need to be put under general anesthesia given the nature of the surgery and what is involved. Incisions will be made in the upper abdominal area through which a small camera and surgical tools can be inserted. It’s through these incisions that the stomach size is surgically changed and reduced. Using small incisions allows for a more comfortable healing experience for patients, and less scarring as well.

Is sleeve gastrectomy the right answer for you?

The answer to this question cannot be provided online. There are so many factors that a Dallas bariatric surgeon needs to take into account before determining which procedure will best meet your needs. During a full consultation, we’ll be able to assess your medical history and general health and then determine which weight loss surgery option is the right one for you.
