General Information About LAP-BAND Weight Loss Surgery

LAP-BAND surgery works well for many weight loss patients, but it is not right for everyone. The LAP-BAND surgical method is intended for adults with a BMI of 40 or higher. Most patients are at least 100 pounds overweight, and have been struggling with their weight for most of their adult life. It is not intended to be a shortcut to weight loss for those trying to avoid diet or exercise, but rather as one tool to help you reach your weight loss goals. Ideal patients for the LAP-BAND procedure are prepared to make major lifestyle changes.

Before your LAP-BAND surgery is scheduled, your doctor will want you to meet with other medical experts, including a dietician, to help you prepare for the surgery and its aftermath. You will also undergo a number of medical tests to evaluate your overall health and ensure that you are a good candidate for bariatric surgery.

During LAP-BAND surgery, a small pouch is created in the upper part of the stomach to limit food intake. A gastric band is placed around the upper part of the stomach to constrict this pouch. This band has a balloon that is adjustable to control the amount of food that can be consumed and the resulting feeling of fullness.

LAP-BAND bariatric surgery requires small incisions, only about one centimeter long. It is performed with general anesthesia, and the procedure itself usually takes less than an hour. Most patients stay in the hospital for less than 48 hours. You may experience some pain or discomfort following the procedure, which can be treated with ordinary pain relievers. Several days following the procedure, you will likely have an x-ray to allow your surgeon to check the placement of the LAP-BAND.

LAP-BAND procedures are often preferred over other bariatric surgery methods because there is no cutting or stapling of the stomach, and it is completely reversible. The LAP-BAND can be adjusted to the patient's needs following surgery without the need for additional surgeries. As you reach your weight loss goals, the band can be tightened or loosened to adjust the amount you are able to eat, resulting in steady weight loss over time.
